Firebird bulks up Oakover manganese resource
Mining News Net reports that Firebird Metals boosted its flagship Oakover project in the Pilbara by 170% to 172 million tonnes at 9.9% manganese. The upgrade was driven by an 80% increase at Sixty Sixer, a 600% increase at Jay Eye and a maiden resource at Karen. Combined with the nearby Hill 616 project, Firebird now has 229 Mt of manganese in the ground.
The company is moving away from its early direct-shipping ore plan. It will instead study a long-life operation, about 85 km from Newman, producing manganese ore for steel and manganese sulphate for batteries. Metallurgical work, including ore sorting and dense media beneficiation, is already under way.
