Mining Weekly reports that Firebird Metals added 108 million tonnes to the mineral resource at its Oakover manganese project in Western Australia. The project is now estimated to host 172 million tonnes at 9.9% manganese, a 170% increase on the historical resource.

Managing Director Peter Allen said the size of the upgrade gave Firebird a compelling reason to move away from its rapid development strategy. Instead, the company would study Oakover as a 20-year operation producing both manganese ore and higher-value manganese sulphate. The manganese ore study was expected in the June quarter and the sulphate study in the September quarter.
